Land Act: demonstration held

July 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - SALEM:

The members of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate demanding the Centre to withdraw the controversial Land Acquisition Act 2015 with immediate effect.

A. Ponnusamy, district president of the Sangam, led the agitation. K. Thangavel, MLA, and others said that the farmers will in no way allow the forcible acquisition of farm lands without the consent of the owners.

The Act has been enacted with the sole objective of forcibly grabbing the land from the hapless farmers and handing over the same to multinational corporations.

The BJP led National Democratic Alliance regime has introduced many amendments to the Land Acquisition Act 2013.

This will badly affect the food production in the country. This will only pave way for more and more farm lands being utilised for non-farm activities.

The present Act was out and out against the interest of the farmers and the Centre should withdraw it without any condition, they said.

P. Thangavelu, district secretary of the CPI (M), S.P. Thangavel, district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, and others participated in the agitation.

At the end, the leaders handed over a petition to District Collector K. Maharabushanam.

Earlier, they marched from Fort ground to the Collectorate.
