Former India stumper returns as Mumbai Ranji coach; will also head MCA’s Indoor Academy.

Mumbai Cricket Association has decided to give the reins of their senior team to Chandrakant Pandit as the 40-time Ranji champions go through a transition phase and look to build a strong outfit in the next few years.

Pandit, who led Mumbai to successive titles in 2003 and 2004 and is currently the director of cricket operations in Kerala Cricket Association, is known to be a hard task master and was the unanimous choice of the Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC), said chairman Dilip Vengsarkar after the meeting yesterday.

“We discussed a few names but we felt that Pandit was the best person for the job as he has a proven track record and he an excellent strategist and man manager,” Vengsarkar said, pointing out that he had contacted members who could not make it to yesterday’s meeting on phone.

“Pandit will also be the head coach of MCA’s Indoor Academy as we felt that having two different people could lead to clash of egos. At the academy, we will have specialised coaches to work with him.”

While the appointment is for two years, MCA and Pandit are yet to discuss the contractual details, including his remuneration for the dual job.

This would be a sort of second coming for the man, who left the job in a jiffy in 2005 after learning that MCA had approached another senior cricketer for the post following the team’s loss in the semi-final.

He then went on to become director of cricket with the Maharashtra Cricket Association and took a rookie team to Ramakant Desai one-day title in 2006-07 season and has also served as coach of Madhya Pradesh and director of MCA’s Indoor Academy. He was alos the director of cricket at the Rajasthan Cricket Association

CIC also decided to pick 20 players between 10-12 years through selection tournaments. They will be trained at the indoor academy. Milind Rege will be the head of selection committee that consists of Karsan Ghavri, Ravi Thaker, Nishit Shetty.
