A 32-year-old man was shot dead on the Tarn Taran road late last night. Within 18 hours, the Sultanwind police caught the culprits.

The victim has been identified as Tarundeep Singh, alias Rinku, a resident of New Krishan Nagar on the Amritsar-Tarn Taran road. He was the only son of his parents and had two children, including a son, who is just one and a half years old.

The accused have been identified as Amit Kumar, a resident of New Krishna Nagar, and Vikramjit Singh, alias Vicky, a resident of Kot Atma Ram, Sultanwind Road. The police have recovered a country-made gun.

SHO, Sultanwind police post, Parvesh Chopra, who led the investigation, said both the accused had procured the gun from Ghaziabad, Meerut, for Rs 45,000 with a view to kill Tarundeep.

“As Amit Kumar owed Rs 1.3 lakh to the victim and Vikramjit owed Rs 1 lakh to him, they conspired to kill him. This was revealed during preliminary investigations.

Onlookers said the accused were in a Verna Hyundai car and fled from the scene after gunning Tarundeep Singh down.

The deceased’s friend, Sarbjit Singh Verka, said the incident had occurred at around 11 pm. Incidentally, the mobile phone of one of the accused fell on the ground which led the police to identify the accused.

Moreover, the victim, who dealt in finance and real estate, had an auto record application on his mobile phone. This had enabled him to record the calls made to him around 10.30 pm by the accused who was identified as Amit.

“He had received a call. The man on the other side had asked him to come out of the house to have some business talk. After his insistence, the victim came out and after around half an hour, we received a message from someone that he was lying in a pool of blood on the roadside,” said Verka.

SHO Parvesh Chopra of the Sultanwind police station said the circumstantial evidence had helped them in identifying the culprits.
