ASANSOL: The civic polls in 106 wards of Asansol Municipal Corporation will take place on October 3. The elections to Asansol and Kulti civic bodies have remained due since last June. Polls to Jamuria and Raniganj municipalities are also due.
The state will merge the Asansol Municipal Corporation, Kulti Municipality, Raniganj Municipality and Jamuria Municipality to form a mega civic body like Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

Civic affairs minister Firhad Hakim has already conveyed the decision to state election commissioner Susanta Ranjan Upadhyay. October 3 is a Saturday and polls will also be held at Howrah and Bidhannagar on that day, Hakim said.
Trinamool took over both the Asansol and Kulti civic boards just after the 2009 LS polls. But, the loss in Asansol Lok Sabha seat to BJP’s Babul Supriyo and then the defeat in the Siliguri Municipal Corporation polls this year forced the state government to postpone polls further.
“We are ready to fight polls and is confident of winning the boards,” said Nirmal Karmakar, district president of BJP. Former MP and CPM leader Bansa Gopal Choudhury has already demanded free and fair polls.
