State forest Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar has turned down the suggestion by National Tiger Conservation Authority to keep the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) and Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR) closed for tourists during the monsoon season.
A direction received by Principle Chief Conservator of Forest (wildlife) Sarjan Bhagat said closure of the parks would affect livelihood of people dependent on tourism. Bhagat told The Indian Express, “I had forwarded the NTCA suggestion to government and sought its direction. We will take care that animals are unaffected by tourist flow in this breeding season by restricting the number of vehicles.”
NTCA member secretory B S Bonal had visited TATR last month and advised forest officials to keep the tiger reserves closed during the monsoon season when animals breed.
