Hospitals see a spurt in water-borne diseases

Sporadic cases of H1N1 continue to be reported, with 19 cases recorded in June, a fall from 40 in May and over 200 reported in April.

At Jogeshwari-based Trauma hospital, where there are 55 beds for monsoon-related diseases, most cases are of fever.

Following monsoon showers that started in June, water-borne diseases, and a rise in cases of hepatitis and fever are being reported across public and private hospitals. According to data from the civic health department, 4,411 fever cases and 99 hepatitis A and E cases were recorded in June across all civic-run hospitals and dispensaries. The data does not indicate patient load at private hospitals where huge admissions for water-borne diseases are being recorded.

Dr Minnie Khetarpal, Deputy Executive Health Officer at BMC, said special monsoon wards have been created in peripheral and tertiary-care hospitals to tackle patients. “The incidence of monsoon-related ailments is low. As far as mosquito-borne infections go, there are a few cases of malaria and dengue,” she said.

According to Dr Shahid Barmare, general physician at Kohinoor Hospital, a spurt in viral infections with symptoms like fever, cough, cold and bodyache, can be seen due to rapid change in weather over the last few days.

“Four to five patients are admitted for hepatitis. Several others with the virus are coming on OPD basis. Consuming contaminated food and water, specially from street vendors, can cause hepatitis,” Barmare said.

At Jogeshwari-based Trauma hospital, where there are 55 beds for monsoon-related diseases, most cases are of fever. “We are admitting patients with viral infection. So far, leptospirosis and dengue cases are low. Although there are a few malaria cases,” said hospital superintendent Dr Shashikant Wadekar. Students can access their scorecards by entering their login details on jac.nic.in, jharresults.nic.in, or jac.jharkhand.gov.in. The marksheet will include personal details, subject-wise marks, and a cumulative score. Last year, the pass percentage was 95.38%.
