Gregg Popovich says he's 'not calling anyone at midnight' to start NBA free agency

When the clock strikes midnight on July 1, it will become open season for NBA teams as free agency will officially begin.

The Spurs are reportedly one team that could land LaMarcus Aldridge, who has Texas ties and is not expected to return to the Portland Trailblazers.

But Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich gave the most Gregg Popovich answer about calling free agents at midnight on Wednesday.

From the San Antonio Express-News:

“I’m not calling anyone at midnight,” he said. “I’ll be in bed. And if that’s the difference in someone coming or not coming, then I don’t want them.”

If signing the veteran forward depends on a midnight phone call, he may be looking somewhere else. The Spurs already have a young superstar in Kawhi Leonard, but with key players like Tim Duncan looking towards the end of their careers, adding Aldridge would boost the Spurs’ future depth.
