Florida State will likely move its 2016 spring game to Orlando while Doak Campbell Stadium undergoes renovations, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.

Athletic director Stan Wilcox told Florida State’s board of trustees that Orlando serves as a better option than Jacksonville, the other potential candidate, the Democrat reported.

Florida State’s campus and the Citrus Bowl, which will also host FSU’s 2016 season-opener against Ole Miss, are separated by about 250 miles of highway. Travel for Florida State games has routinely put a strain on ticket holders from cities within the Florida peninsula.

"It's good to get to a different part of the state where a number of our fans can get easy access to see our team play,” Wilcox told the Democrat.

The last time Florida State’s spring game was held outside of Doak Campbell was in 2004, when the venue was being updated. It was still held within Tallahassee’s city limits, however.

The 2016 spring game in Orlando would create additional revenue for Florida State, but Wilcox told the Democrat there are no plans to permanently move Florida State’s spring game, which is usually held in mid-April.

“But we haven't gone into this with the thought that we're going to do this on an annual basis,” he told the Democrat. “We knew that the stadium would be under construction and we didn't want to have our fans only in a certain section of the stadium because of the construction. We wanted to be able to have the game without that interference."
