Mizoram: 29th anniversary of signing of Mizo Accord celebrated

The ZNP also held a minute of silence to mourn all those who lost their lives during the insurgency years (which includes civilians, officials and insurgents).

The 29th anniversary of signing of the historic Mizo Accord — between the Centre and the erstwhile underground Mizo National Front (MNF) on June 30, 1986 — was celebrated Tuesday all over Mizoram. Political parties, including the ruling Congress, took part in the celebrations that marked the end of two decades of insurgency in the state.

The MNF held formal celebrations at 14 different towns across the state with senior party leaders leading the ceremonies at many places.

The party’s senior vice president, Dr R Lalthangliana, said in Aizawl that the Mizo Accord was a joint effort of church leaders, community-based organisations, various political parties and student groups.

“Our men are still willing to fight for the community and our land, but it was because of the demand of the Mizo people, we ended the violence and put down guns,” he said.
