Mohammad Azharuddin has been a successful Indian cricketer and captain. His wristy stroke-play is legendary, so is his second marriage and separation from actress Sangeeta Bijlani. He loved watches and designer clothes (he still does) and everything glitzy. He was modest when he stormed onto the cricketing scene with three back-to-back Test tons, got the captaincy when the Indian team of the nineties were in their transition phase (they still are, and will continue to be), and when the late Raj Singh Dungarpur, the then Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Chief tossed the question to him, ''Miyan, captain banoge?''
He took over the reins of a team loaded with four former captains, brought stability in the team's outings overseas and was cruelly run out at 99 Tests, not to forget 334 One-dayers. His biggest loss though was the death of his 19-year-old son Ayazuddin in a motorbike accident in September, 2011.
A fascinating life no doubt, but is the time right for his biopic? I think not. Unless the makers (Balaji Motion Pictures) have at its core the match-fixing scandal that rocked Indian cricket in 2000. That changed the cricketing world and people started looking at cricketers differently. Also, every match is tainted with a fixing allegation, even though it may not always be true.
The wound is still open, cricket still has that stigma attached to it and smaller cricketers have faced the brunt. Ajay Jadeja, Manoj Prabhakar, and recently S Sreesanth are all 'match-fixing casualties'. According to insiders, there are many skeletons stacked neatly in the cupboard!
As a cricket lover, and someone who watched every match before the scandal, I would love to see an honest interpretation of 'match-fixing'. Every cricket fan would want that. There can be no smoke without fire because former South African cricketer Hansie Cronje, who died in an air accident, did come clean.
So there is always going to be that doubt!
Aakash Dahiya should replace Emraan Hashmi!
While on Azhar's biopic, I would like to go on record to say that Aakash Dahiya will make a mind-boggling Azhar.
Now, don't get me wrong. I have nothing against Emraan Hashmi. The guy is a fabulous actor. But in a biopic, an actor has to be very intrinsic, with no sense of self. I have seen very little of Aakash but of what I have seen, I know he is a power-house of an actor. The first time I saw him was in D-DAY, then in BOBBY JASOOS and recently in a bit role in TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS. In all three roles, he dazzled.
What is arresting about his quality as an actor is his body language which few get right, if only for a few scenes. Any trained eye will tell you he is brilliant. I don't know if it's too late to make a change. The first look is already out, and Emraan still walks like Emraan onto the cricket field.
Azhar had that swagger, which, to me, only Aakash can recreate. Azhar was also a gangly youngster when he walked into the Indian team which Aakash is!
A Czar was born in 1984. Azhar will release in 2016!
Kareena will be invited!
Shahid Kapoor has finally come clean on his guest list, albeit through 'paid news'. One of his sources has claimed that all his colleagues will be invited to his July 12 wedding. So this means that Kareena Kapoor-Khan will automatically be on the guest list. Poor girl, she was simply harassed about the invite.
So it's Mauja Hi Mauja and Nagada Nagada time for Shahid, Kareena and all his other colleagues.
Maybe, as an ode he could sing Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson's classic...
