Bajrang Dal activists publicly beating up a Muslim man for allegedly stealing a calf from a cowshed on June 25 has led to tension in Shamli district.
While the Muslim man — Riaz (42), a resident of Banat locality in Shamli — has been arrested on charges of theft and under the Animal Cruelty Act, a case has been registered against six Bajrang Dal men, including its district convener, Vivek Premi. Riaz is lodged in Muzaffarnagar District Jail.

The incident has left the police in a fix. While members of BJP, along with RSS offshoots like Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, have began an agitation alleging that Riaz was carrying the calf for slaughtering, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has started a protest demanding the withdrawal of the case against Riaz and arrest of the accused Bajrang Dal activists.
According to the FIR lodged at Adarsh Mandi police station, on June 25, Bajrang Dal activist Anuj Bansal had allegedly caught Riaz stealing a calf from his cowshed, where he runs ‘Bachhda Paalan Kendra’. Bansal alleged that Riaz and two others were beating up the calf when he found them. Except Riaz, the others, however, managed to escape. Later, Bansal called up his acquaintances who paraded Riaz for a distance of 1 km and assaulted him before handing him over to police.
