Demanding that the CBI probe into the death of V. Gokulraj, his mother Chitra and relatives along with cadre of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) continued their indefinite fast for the second consecutive day here on Monday.
On the directions of the Madras High Court, a three-member team of doctors performed autopsy on Saturday at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital. Stating that her son was murdered and demanding that the police register a murder case, Ms. Chitra refused to receive the body.
On Sunday, VCK cadre along with Gokulraj’s relatives staged a protest in front of the hospital. The police removed them and detained them at the Nehru Auditorium near the Old Bus Stand. Though they were released in the evening, many refused to leave the auditorium and continued their fast.
On Monday evening, Namakkal District Adi Dravidar Welfare Officer Gunasekar handed over a solatium of Rs. 5.62 lakh to Ms. Chitra at the auditorium.
Protests were held across the district on Monday. As many as 23 cadre of the VCK were picked up when they blocked the road near Manikoondu. Also 109 cadre of Makkal Desam Katchi were removed in Nethimedu, 25 in Ayothiapattanam and 53 cadre of the CPI were picked up near the DIG office . All of them were detained in marriage halls.
Meanwhile, K. Shankar, Inspector-General of Police (West Zone), held discussions with DIG, Salem Range, Vidya Kulkarni, Namakkal Superintendent of Police S.R. Senthil Kumar, Tiruchengode DSP Vishnu Priya and the special team at the DSP camp office in Tiruchengode.
