The counselling by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) for engineering seats in member colleges saw a huge turnout on Monday, the first day of counselling. The consortium pushed the medical counselling for later due to the uncertainty surrounding the All India Pre-Medical Test.
Having made a departure from the schedules earlier, when the counselling for medical seats would be held first, this time’s counselling for engineering seats saw 717 students of the 820 who registered turn up. These numbers, COMEDK officials said, was the highest in recent years.
Like in the Common Entrance Test counselling, in which the first round of seat allotment is over, computer science emerged a popular course in the COMEDK counselling too.
Most of who were willing to take an engineering seat under the COMEDK quota were those who were unhappy with the seat allotted to them under the CET. “My CET rank was not enough to get me a seat in one of the top colleges in Bengaluru. Here, I have a better chance,” said Ankit Pandey, who aims to pursue electronics. On the other hand, those from other States were here mainly for two reasons: some of them were sure of wanting to pursue engineering from a college in Karnataka, like Swathi S. from Jharkand; the others were those who were awaiting results of national entrance tests. “The JEE-Mains results are not yet out, and I am here to be on the safe side and assure a seat for myself,” said Rishav Shekar, a student form Bihar.
