Appeal over Bashir 'about future predicaments'

30 June 2015 - 02:02 By Penwell Dlamini

The decision to appeal the Pretoria High Court's ruling that the government was legally bound to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir might be an attempt to "remedy" similar predicaments in the future, political analyst Mzoxolo Mpolase said. Bashir, wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes, was in the country for an African Union summit two weeks ago.Mpolase said: "I doubt that [the government] wants to simply nullify whatever was said by the high court. But it wants a remedy of sorts."Diplomatic objectives sometimes will not be congruent with international legislation."The ministers of justice, police, international relations and home affairs are among the 12 state respondents who were heavily criticised on Wednesday for not observing the rule of law, when Bashir flew out of the country with ease.Additional reporting by BDLive..
