Mumbai University releases Zoology textbook based on student feedback

Emphasis was given on information about the ecology prevalent in and around the colleges.

Officials believe that by doing, so the students would be able to gain practical knowledge without venturing too far from their college or residence.

“We felt there was a need to make available quality study material with relevance to the current scenario. The idea was also to have a uniform syllabus and study material in all affiliated colleges from Mumbai to Ratnagiri region to benefit students from urban as well as rural areas,” said Dr Anil Singh, a zoology professor from Mithibai College and one of the coordinators for the new textbook.

The subject matter of the book was reviewed by more than 127 zoology professors and hundreds of students before being published by the university press.

The textbooks and practical books with ISBN are prepared by a writers’ committee comprising teachers of the subjects under the chairmanship of Dr Vinayak Dalvie, chairman of Board of Studies of Zoology of MU and department of zoology at Mithibai College,Vile Parle.

“The Board of Studies for Zoology has been the first to accept the fact that students have specific requirements, different regions have different ecology and hence teachers and students from colleges affiliated to MU were involved in preparing the new syllabus.” Dalvie added.

The textbook was launched by Minister for Higher and Technical Education Ravindra Waikar at the Phirozeshah Mehta Auditorium at the Kalina campus of the university in the presence of noted water conservationist and Magsaysay award winner Rajendra Singh.
