Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. (IOCL) has let a contract to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) for the engineering, procurement, and construction of two 180,000 cu m LNG storage tanks, which will be the main facility at a terminal being built at Ennore in Tamil Nadu, India. The receiving terminal will be the first such facility to be built on India’s east coast.
Construction of the tanks is slated to begin in July; completion is slated for spring 2018.
LNG imported to the terminal will be supplied as feedstock to fertilizer plants as well as electric power generation plants. Plans also call for the use of LNG as city gas in urban areas soon. The terminal will initially have the capacity to handle 5 million tonnes/year of LNG, expanding eventually to 15 million tpy.
IOCL let a contract in early 2012 to Foster Wheeler AG’s Global Engineering & Construction Group for work in the terminal (OGJ Online, Jan. 19, 2012).
