Coast Guard seizes P50k in undocumented sea urchins in Samar

Some P50,000 worth of undocumented sea urchins was seized in Samar before they could be brought to Manila last weekend, the Philippine Coast Guard said Monday.

The Coast Guard said its operatives seized the two boxes of sea urchins in Allen, from a Manila-bound public utility bus.

It said it received a tip from Jose Siervo, a fisheries quarantine officer of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Northern Samar, that the sea urchins would be transported on an Elavil bus driven by Rolando Clarion.

A team with a K-9 unit from the Coast Guard inspected the bus at Balwarteco Port and found the boxes of sea urchins hidden on the bus.

Inspection showed the boxes had 86 packs of undocumented sea urchins owned by one Elvy Flores, 59, of Lavezares, Northern Samar.

The boxes were turned over to the BFAR. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
