The Arjuna’s Penance located at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, is considered as the world’s largest bas-relief measuring 31m x 9m. This huge whale-back shaped rock contains figures of gods, demigods, men, beasts, and birds and is said to be one of the biggest open-air rock canvases in the world. The surface of the rock has detailed carvings, showing the most endearing and natural depictions of animals especially the elephants and monkeys.
