Belur police on Sunday arrested a 22-years-old youth on allegation of being involved in a house theft and recovered valuables worth over Rs. 5 lakhs from him.

The accused has been identified as Jainuddin alias Tanvir, native of Bikkodu in Belur taluk. He has been arrested.

Superintendent of Police Raman Gupta, here on Monday, told press persons that the accused stole valuables worth over Rs. 5 lakh, including 150 grams of gold ornaments from a house belonging to Ravikumar of Pump House Street in Belur on May 20.

“The accused was an employee at a hotel in Bengaluru. He had recently returned to his native place. He kept a watch on families who placed their house-keys somewhere near the entrance before leaving their house. In this incident he opened the door during day time and took away valuables,” he said.

The SP said that police were probing if he was involved in any other cases. He also appealed to the public to be careful about their keys. "Don't keep keys outside thinking that nobody will find it," he said.
