For those who admire Rabindranath Tagore and his music, here's some good news. Sangeet Bharati Muktadhara is organizing a concert in Kolkata on July 5 to commemorate 100 years of Tagore's Gitanjali (in English) and his Nobel Prize.
A thousand singers from different parts of the country will sing Tagore's songs in unison. “This will be our third instalment of Thousand Voices Rabindrasangeet Choir.
We were the first to initiate it in 2007 and 2011,” informed Arundhati Deb, president of the organization. This time around, the event will be bigger and better.
Apart from Kolkata singers, there will be artistes from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Baroda, Patna, Allahabad, Kanpur, Bhilai et al. The songs will be interspersed with poetry reading sessions from Gitanjali. “For the benefit of the non-Bengali audience, English translations of the songs will be projected on a screen through multimedia applications,” added Arundhati.
Selecting these 1,000 singers was no mean feat for Arundhati and it took her a year to form the group. “The money we get from sponsors is not enough for such a show. The entire expenditure is borne by the artistes and our organization,” she added. The two-hour music session will be anchored by Usha Uthup.
