There cannot be a brighter start to Wimbledon 2015 in the women's singles, as the top seed Serena Williams will be in action on the first day of the competition. Apart from Serena, the always-popular Maria Sharapova will also start off her campaign on Monday.

Serena has been on an amazing run this year winning the first two Grand Slams -- the Australian Open and the French Open. Hence, it is no surprise to see Serena heading into the competition as favourite to clinch her sixth Wimbledon title.

The American opens her tournament against unseeded Margarita Gasparyan of Russia, who should not trouble the 2012 champion. Gasparyan is just making her Wimbledon debut and she might consider herself unfortunate to set up a date with Serena.

But, Gasparyan could also use this opportunity to announce her arrival by putting up a fighting performance. She is going to be watched all around the world. Isn't that in itself exciting for a 20-year-old?

Winning might be out of her reach, though, as Serena's record in the first round of Wimbledon stands at 16-0.

Serena Williams is expected to cruise through the first few rounds, but the real action starts from the round of 16, where she is expected to meet higher-ranked players.

Another title contender, Maria Sharapova, will face Johanna Konta from Great Britain at Centre Court. Sharapova, like Serena, should progress through to the second round without breaking much sweat.

More than a decade has passed since Sharapova won Wimbledon in 2004. She has come close in these ten years, but has failed to lift the title on the grass courts of the All-England club ever since.

She must be determined to repeat the feat she accomplished as a 17-year- old. Ever since Sharapova won the prestigious Wimbledon, the Russian has gone on to win all the other Grand Slams, but a second Wimbledon title has eluded her.

"I've been very fortunate to have won all the Grand Slams, and if I could win Wimbledon again, it would be a dream for me. That's certainly something which I think of a lot when I'm training and I have to push myself. When I'm working hard, I'm thinking of that beautiful plate. It's definitely something that I have wished to hold again for many years," ESPN quoted Sharapova as saying.

But her road to Wimbledon is not going to be an easy one with other top players in the fray competing for the same honours.

Apart from Serena and Sharpova, Venus Williams will also start off her campaign against Madison Brengle and sixth seed Lucie Safarova will face Alison Riske from USA.

Day 1 Wimbledon 2015 is scheduled for 11.30 am BST (4 pm IST, 6.30 am ET) start. The matches at Centre Court and No.1 Court will begin at 1 pm local time (5.30 pm IST, 8 am ET).
