Police cut BJP's padayatra short
BELAGAVI: Police blocked BJP leaders' padayatra at KK Kopp Cross, 5km from Suvarna Vidhana Soudha (SVS), just before it entered Pune-Bengaluru NH-4 on Sunday.
After the padayatra was cut short, BJP leaders, including former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, state BJP president Pralhad Joshi, opposition leader Jagadish Shettar, and opposition leader in council K S Eshwarappa, addressed the party workers at KK Kopp Cross.
After the public meet, police took the leaders into their custody, only to free them later. MPs Shobha Karandlaje and Suresh Angadi, MLAs Govind Karjol, Umesh Katti, Sanjay Patil and Anand Mamani, MLCs Somanna Bevinmarad and Ramachandre Gowda were among those arrested by police.
BJP had organized the padayatra from Badal Ankalagi village to SVS, condemning the alleged failure of the state government in clearing the dues of sugarcane farmers. Thousands of party workers participated in the walkathon. Badal Ankalagi is the place where Gurunath Chapagaon, a debt-ridden farmer, committed suicide early this month. On behalf of the party, Yeddyurappa handed over a cheque of Rs 2 lakh to Gurunath's family before leaving Badal Ankalagi.
'Clear dues for a smooth session'
Addressing the party workers, Yeddyurappa took chief minister Siddaramaiah to task for allegedly not clearing the dues of cane growers, and for not keeping the promise on the price to be given to them. "The negligence on the part of CM Siddaramaiah in addressing the problems of farmers is leading to a series of farmer suicides. He must first clear the dues of farmers, and recover it from erring sugar factories later." Joshi took a dig at AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi, saying that he is crisscrossing the country to know the problems of people form all walks of life. "But he is not coming to Karnataka, back-to-back farmer suicides notwithstanding," he said, and added that they will not allow the government to conduct the monsoon session till it resolves to clear the dues. Endorsing Joshi's warning on conducting the session, Eshwarappa said the issue of sugarcane has snowballed because of lack of coordination between chief minister Siddaramaiah and sugar minister Mahadeva Prasad.
