Five thatched huts were gutted in a fire accident at Nethaji Nagar here on Wednesday. Though no loss of life was reported property worth several lakh was destroyed. The fire has left families homeless. Police said the fire broke out in the house of Mercalene at 3.30 p.m.

On noticing it residents ran helter-skelter leaving behind their valuables. Aided by strong winds the fire engulfed the neighbouring houses in no time injuring Sagaya Mary’s three month old baby. The child sustained minor injuries and was rushed to the Puducherry Government General Hospital.

A fire tender rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. An electric short circuit is said to be the reason. The exact cause could be ascertained only after a thorough investigation, police said. On information AIADMK MLA A. Anbalagan accompanied by Revenue officials inspected the site.
