Just days after the Kingston Lions Club donated $100,000, the radiologists from Kingston's hospitals matched them Friday morning with their own pledge of $100,000 in support of the fundraising project to bring a second MRI to Kingston General Hospital.

"On behalf of the radiologists, I am pleased we can pledge this donation to the purchase of a second MRI," Dr. Lisa Jong, president of the AIMMS Medicine Professional Group said of the generous gift. "It will be a great step forward to help improve patient care."

One hundred percent of the funds raised came from the radiologists who work at KGH, Hotel Dieu Hospital, Providence Care and Queen's University.

Radiologists often work quietly behind the scenes in the care of people from across Southeastern Ontario. They have a clear picture on what our community needs though, and have joined together to make a $100,000 pledge in support of the purchase and installation of a second MRI at Kingston General Hospital.

The $6-million fundraising project is the largest undertaken by imaging services, noted Karen Pearson, director of Imaging Services. It is a huge goal and to have the entire department behind it, and to have the radiologists involved is heartening. "To have everybody take ownership of it is wonderful."

Pierre Gaumond, a representative from the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation Board of Directors thanked the radiologists for their donation, noting it is an important step in helping bring the second MRI to KGH.

There are currently four MRI machines in the region, with a large one at Kingston General Hospital, two at Kingston MRI and one in Belleville.

The waiting list for MRI's at KGH is 1,000 people on a daily basis.

MRI services in Kingston are extremely important especially for southeastern Ontario, noted AIMMS Business Manager Chris Williamson, and for the radiologists, it was important to support the second MRI.
