Anand ends second in Norway Chess

Former world champion Viswanathan Anand played out a quick draw with Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria to finish second in Norway chess tournament, part of the Grand Chess tour.

The last round did not provide the expected fireworks as Topalov just decided to play it safe with his white pieces and followed an earlier game played between Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine and Magnus Carlsen. The game ended in a draw via repetition in just 18 moves.

Looking back at his tournament, Anand said, “Plus three (his three wins); I’m pretty satisfied with my play and my result. If you said before the tournament, plus three, three wins like this, I wouldn’t have complained too much.”PTI

Indian teams for Zimbabwe on Monday 

The Indian cricket team, which will tour Zimbabwe for three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and two Twenty20 Internationals, will be selected here on Monday. 

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) All-India Senior Selection Committee will meet here to select the teams for the forthcoming tour which commences on July 10. IANS

Sangakkara to retire during India series

Sri Lanka’s batting great Kumar Sangakkara ( below ) on Saturday ended speculation about his future, saying he will retire during the home series against India in August.

“This is my time to call it a day,” Sangakkara, 37, told reporters on the sidelines of the second Test against Pakistan at the P. Sara Oval in Colombo.

“I wanted to retire after the World Cup, but was requested by the selectors to stay on,” he said. “I agreed to play four more Tests. I will honour that agreement. I gave my word, so will stand by that.”AFP

Winning the Ashes would be my best achievement: Cook

England captain Alastair Cook (above) believes that winning this year’s Ashes series would be his best achievement in the game.

“From where we’ve been if we did win the Ashes that would be remarkable, something I’d be very proud of. It would be my best achievement,” Cook told reporters.Reuters

Istomin wins maiden ATP title in Wimbledon warm-up

Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin ( right ) won his maiden ATP tour title as he defeated Sam Querrey in two tie-break sets in the final of the Nottingham Open on Saturday.

Istomin prevailed 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (8/6) to triumph in the Wimbledon warm-up event and in the process beat Querrey, ranked 48 places above him, having lost four of his last five matches against the American.AFP

Bencic downs Radwanska

Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic ( right above ) beat Agnieszka Radwanska in the final of the Eastbourne grass court tournament on Saturday to claim her first WTA title and become the youngest player since 2008 to clinch a premier-level trophy.

Bencic, 18, romped through the deciding set to clinch the title with a 6-4 4-6 6-0 victory which further underlined her good form on grass ahead of Wimbledon which starts on Monday. At 18 years and 109 days, Bencic is the youngest player to win a premier-level title since Caroline Wozniacki won in New Haven almost seven years ago.Reuters

Sania, Hingis lose Aegon International semi-final

Top seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis were ousted from the WTA Aegon International following a semi-final defeat to Caroline Garcia and Katarina Srebotnik.PTI

Ramandeep Singh scored two fine goals as the showpiece sub continental hockey encounter between arch-rivals India and Pakistan ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw in the World League Semi-finals at the KHC Dragons Stadium here on Friday. Captain Muhammad Imran scored twice for Pakistan.PTI
