A consensus has been arrived at between Maharashtra Maritime Board and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) over the type of design for the 8km long Rewas-Karanja creek bridge. It has been decided to have a cable stayed bridge at a certain height.

In the last six months, there have been a series of meetings between the two agencies over the project. In January, dna had reported about differences between the two agencies over the design and height of the creek bridge.

"It has been agreed to construct the bridge at a height of 35 metres over the creek instead of erecting it at an extraordinary height of over 105 metres or to have a bascule lift bridge," said UPS Madan, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA.

Earlier, the MMB had demanded a bascule lift design for the creek bridge wherein the road traffic is stopped and a span of the road is lifted using hydraulics to allow sea or river traffic to pass by. However, it has higher maintenance cost.

The demand by MMB was for allowing passage of sea traffic, largely passenger ferries that sail at the creek between Rewas and Karanja.

Work in underway to prepare Detailed Project Report on the proposed bridge. "The DPR is close to completion. Once it is submitted, we will decide to begin tendering process for it's construction," added Madan.

The estimated project cost will be clear only once the DPR is submitted to the MMRDA. However, as per the initial workings of the development authority, constructing an 8-km long segmental or continuous span girder (neither cable stayed bridge nor bascule lift) designed bridge has an estimated cost of Rs 403.31 crore.

Presently, people travelling between Rewas and Karanja have two options – either travel by road via Khopoli-Pen-Poinad which is around 70 kms or else opt for a 10-15 minutes ride on a passenger boat to cross the creek. However, Rewas is accessible by ferry only during high tides, the jetties of Mora and Rewas needs dredging in order to make it operational even during low tides.
