The Puducherry Planning Authority (PPA) has set in motion the process of drawing up a Comprehensive Development Plan to identify requirements for infrastructure and basic amenities for the city.
The first stakeholders meeting in the run up to the drawing up of the CDP was held on Saturday with Sai Consulting Engineers Pvt. Ltd which has been commissioned by the government for preparation of the plan providing an overview of the exercise.
An official said the CDP for the Puducherry planning area covering an extent of 41.91 sq.km was first notified in 1982. Subsequently the CDP was reviewed and notified during 1997.
Considering the fast changing major economic activities such as industrial and tourism development, changing land use patterns and other development in various sectors the Puducherry Planning Authority decided to revise the CDP and Zonal Development Plans for Puducherry to an extent of 293.77 sq.km.
The CDP is being prepared for the projected year 2036 and includes two municipalities — Puducherry and Oulgaret and five commune panchayats — Ariyankuppam, Villianur, Mannadipet, Bahour and Nettapakkam, he said.
The PPA caters to a population of 9,50,289 (Census 2011).
Puducherry Municipality spread over 19.54 sq km has a population of 2,44,377 while Oulgaret Muncipality falls in an area of 34.40 sq km with a population of 3,00,104. The rest are in the commune panchayats.
The plan would focus on social and physical infrastructure like education, health, transport, water supply and sewerage including inputs from the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which is simultaneously being prepared by the Puducherry Transport Department.
Participants at the meeting discussed on the planning issues, over view of the land market of Puducherry region and future growth, requirement of housing typology and potentials for the growth of the city.
