Tribal Haat project in limbo

June 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - KHAMMAM:

An ambitious plan to set up a Tribal Haat in the tribal heartland of Bhadrachalam has not taken off so far.

The grand plan mooted by the Tourism Department in collaboration with the State Tourism Development Corporation in 2010 continues to remain in limbo much to the disappointment of the tribal artistes and art lovers.

Marketing opportunities

The plan envisages construction of an open-air auditorium, stalls and other facilities as part of the ambitious project to showcase the distinctive cultural heritage of Adivasis and their glorious tradition of handicrafts, besides providing marketing opportunities to the tribal artisans.

A site has been earmarked for the Tribal Haat adjoining the Ramayana Theme Park, originally proposed at Purushothapatnam, on the outskirts of Bhadrachalam , two years ago. However, the merger of the entire Bhadrachalam mandal, except for Bhadrachalam revenue village, with the successor State of Andhra Pradesh last year, virtually derailed the ambitious plan.

Fresh proposal

A fresh proposal is being worked out to develop a Tribal Haat at the site where a tourism hotel is slated to come up at the tri-junction in Kothagudem, said Suman Chakravarthi, District Tourism Officer, Khammam.

A proposal to take up the Tribal Haat project as part of the Tribal Sub-Plan is under the consideration of the agencies concerned, he said, adding that the proposal is likely to take a concrete shape in a few weeks.
