Opp chorus: Advani remarks aimed at Sushma, Raje

In light of LK Advani emphasising the need for probity in public life, opposition parties today said that Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhra Raje must "own up responsibility" in the Lalit Modi controversy.

The Congress on Sunday jumped on senior BJP leader L K Advani’s remarks to attack the Narendra Modi government, claiming that Advani was signalling that those involved in the Lalit Modi episode must quit to prove their innocence.

Advani, in a TV interview on Saturday, had recalled how he had resigned as an MP after his name cropped up in the hawala scam of 1990s and contested his next election only after being cleared in the investigations.

“Whatever (L K) Advaniji has to say, he says it clearly. It is for you to understand what he is saying… ‘laato ke bhoot baaton se nahi mante,” Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said.

“Advaniji is a seasoned leader, who always talks in a measured tone. There are several senior leaders in the BJP who are saying their ‘Mann ki Baat’,” Azad said, referring to PM Narendra Modi’s radio programme.

His party colleague P C Chacko said Advani was clearly telling External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, the two people who are accused of helping under-investigation former IPL boss Lalit Modi, to quit their posts till a probe cleared their names. “The very mention of Advaniji’s resignation now means what? It is a hint that he wants that these two people should own moral responsibility. The Prime Minister should come out with a clear explanation. It is in this context that he (Advani) has given this opinion. So, I think that Advaniji’s opinion is the reflection of thinking in general of the people,” he said.

Festive offer

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar too asked the BJP to heed Advani’s advice. “They (the BJP) had claimed to be a party with a difference. What difference is it? They want to protect their own people… It is clear that they don’t intend to walk on the path of political morality. This is what Advaniji has also cautioned about,” Kumar was quoted as saying by PTI.
