Rohtak, June 28

Rohtak has witnessed 86 deaths because of road accidents this year, while 242 persons have been injured.

Though the figure is lesser than the corresponding period last year, the police say there is no room for complacency.

To reduce the instances of accidents and violations of traffic rules, the police have come up with a scheme to convert two traffic intersections as model ones.

“Recorded messages will be played at traffic light points at Sonepat stand and Sheila bypass chowk to remind commuters of the significance of obeying traffic rules,” says Rohtak SP Shashank Anand, also the ex-officio president of the district chapter of the Road Safety Organisation (RSO).

He said the police personnel manning the PCRs would be trained in the provision of first-aid to victims of road accidents.

Training sessions will be organised for the benefit of vehicle drivers, he says, and adds a “Mission Helmet” campaign has already been launched under the aegis of the RSO to make people aware of their responsibility.

The drive to challan vehicles has been intensified and the system of issuing postal challans has been introduced. On Monday,  has been chosen to be observed as days of zero-tolerance towards violation of traffic rules.

“Efforts are being made to ensure road safety in collaboration with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Public Works Department (B&R), Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), RSO and NGOs such as Arrive Safe,” Anand says.

Apart from installing signages, the local traffic police authorities have decided to focus on curbing the practice of over-speeding and drunken driving, for which speed guns and alcohol meters are being procured.
