I can’t resist Gujarati food; dhokla is an all-time favourite: Pooja Chopra
Says actress and Femina Miss India World 2009 Pooja Chopra in a chat with AT
When Pooja Chopra was born, her father, who’d wanted a son, asked Pooja’s mom to make a choice — to kill the child or forfeit the marriage. When Pooja was just 20 days old, her mom left the house with her two daughters, unable to bear the abuse and humiliation any longer. In the years that followed, Pooja made not just her mom but entire India proud, winning the Femina Miss India World 2009 title.
She then debuted in the big-budget Tamil film Ponnar Shankar, which was received very well, before impressing audiences in her Bollywood debut Commando. In Ahmedabad for a fashion show, she tells us, “Today, when I see girls doing so well everywhere, I feel really proud. I salute my mom for having the courage to leave the house with her newborn daughter and then raising her single-handedly. She is the most positive person I know and even today, when I am extremely angry, just a telephonic conversation with her calms me instantly.” Excerpts from a chat:

DESTINATION GUJARAT
“One of my biggest regrets is that while I have been to Ahmedabad many times, I never really got the chance to explore the city. Next time, I’d love to go street-shopping and take a look at the traditional prints here. I can’t resist Gujarati food and dhokla is an all-time favorite. At home, we have proper Gujarati breakfast on at least one
Sunday every month.

BOLLYWOOD DREAMS
“I got excellent feedback for Commando. After that, I got several offers to play another serious role but I was keen on playing light characters, roles that suit young actors like me better. And I am glad that the wait paid rich dividends. I am very excited about my next Bollywood project. I am someone who can never take up a project just for the sake of money. While the Tamil film industry pays really well, it becomes difficult to emote when you don’t know the language. This is a great time for Bollywood, as actresses like Vidya Balan, Kangana Ranaut and Priyanka Chopra have shown that women can carry a film on their shoulders. Thanks to filmmakers like Zoya Akhtar, even women filmmakers are taken seriously now. Also, script is the real king and if you have talent, you can shine in Bollywood today even if you are from a non-filmy background. I love the kind of movies that Ayan Mukerji and Imtiaz Ali make, and would love to work with them in the future. I also hope that Vipul Shah directs me in a movie someday. Among actors, I would love to work with Hrithik Roshan and Ranbir Kapoor.”
BEYOND MOVIES
“I have been looking after the education of two girls (Neha and Varsha) for the last few years and it gives me great joy when they do well. When I am free, I love to play with my niece. I also love dogs and sometimes, head to a friend’s place just to play with their dog. May be, I will have a pet dog in the future.”
