Youths launch campaign against honking in Mysuru
MYSURU: The Mysuru chapter of Young Indians (YI), a wing of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), on Saturday launched a campaign against honking.
Members of YI distributed stickers and stuck some of them on vehicles at main junctions in the city.
"Being an environmental engineering student, I know how noise affects environment. Apart from contributing to noise pollution, honking affects people, especially elderly ones and those suffering from heart ailments.
We want to create awareness on the ill-effects of honking," said J Keerthi, a student of Sri Jayachamaraja College of Engineering. She was accompanied by her classmate Vyju Vismitha, and Ankith Sonthalia, a young entrepreneur. They distributed stickers that read 'Horn Not Ok Please'.
Early in the day, Mysuru police commissioner B Dayananda flagged off the campaign at the north gate of Mysuru Palace, and appreciated the youths for launching the eco-friendly initiative. Nearly 80 volunteers distributed stickers among motorists passing through KR Hospital Circle, Hardinge Circle, KR Circle, DD Urs Road, Metropole Circle, Kali Dasa Road, Vontikoppal Circle and Royal Inn junction.
"The aim of this long-term project is to observe No Honking Day on the last Saturdays of every month. This is the first-of-its-kind programme in the city. The campaign is to spread awareness on sound pollution among people, so they can avoid honking. We find many riders and drivers honking unnecessarily," Sonthalia added.
Motorists also showed a positive response to the campaign. Besides allowing the campaigners to stick bills on their vehicles, the motorists promised not to honk unnecessarily.
"YI is also planning to rope in college students for their social activities. We have approached some colleges in the city for this, said Pragnya Doulatram, YI member.
