Kedarnath pilgrimage only via air till Jun 30

Dehradun, Jun 28 (UNI) Despite weather predicted to be favourable for next few days, Kedarnath shrine would remain out of bounds for pilgrims on foot till June 30 though devotees can visit the shrine through choppers. The chopper service was available from Guptkashi and Fata and around 65 pilgrims visited the shrine yesterday. However, the road link from Sonprayag to Gaurikund remained damaged and Sonprayag bridge could need two more days to be repaired, forcing administration to declare suspension of pilgrimage on foot till June 30. The pilgrimage was stopped on June 25 due to heavy rains. Devotees continued to visit Yamunotri, Gangotri and Badrinath shrines and Kailash Mansarovar yatra also resumed despite all odds yesterday. As many as 1,100 devotees reached Badrinath from Lambagad yesterday, sources said. The evacuation of around 8,500 pilgrims stranded at Badrinath, Govindghat and Ghangharia would continue today. As many as 900 pilgrims were airlifted, with priority to infirm, elders, women and children. About 400 devotees trudged to Joshimath on foot while 300 walked to Govindghat from Ghangharia. For several Hemkund Sahib devotees, the pilgrimage turned into an ‘’adventure trip’’ as the ITBP soldiers offered rope pulleys to slide them across the river. Meanwhile, the patience of some pilgrims had begun to wear thin and there were reports of slogan shouting at Ghangharia, Badrinath and Sonprayag. UNI JN SV RSA 1012
