MBABANE – The Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) has bestowed the title ‘Lifetime Sponsors’ to mobile network giants MTN Swaziland.

This follows the ‘Y’ello’ company’s record shattering E11.5 million sponsorship to the elite league. MTN announced the increased package – the highest in the local game’s history on Friday morning at the Gigi’s Restaurant in Ezulwini.

PLS Chairman Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze, interviewed after the function, said MTN was no longer an ordinary sponsor but part of the football family, hence the title ‘Lifetime Sponsors’.

The new package, which is among the highest in the region, considering a number of factors like the country’s population, a 12-team semi-professional league and other factors, is a milestone for the local game.

“We run out of words in trying to express our gratitude to MTN for what they are doing for football. This is obviously as a result of our solid relationship with them. Most people did not believe in our football but MTN has always been with us, showing so much confidence in the sport’s leadership and this is bearing fruits.

“We are indebted to the company for their tremendous support and, in particular, to the CEO (Ambrose Dlamini) who has continuously put his neck on the chopping board in defence of football when justifying to his authorities why football deserves support. Dlamini has gone all out as a Swazi to ensure he leaves a legacy that will last long after he is gone on what he did for Swazi football. What he is doing shows that the man has the interest of the country at heart and we are so lucky to have a Swazi of his calibre leading the company.
