June 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:31 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Several parts of the city roads, including the beach road, one of the USPs of Visakhapatnam for tourists, will get a facelift with paintings on walls.

A total of 45,000 sft of walls on the national highway, Tatichetlapalem to Railway Kalyamantapam, Siripuram to Park Hotel, covering the university compound walls and on the beach road, will be painted and beautified with abstract and concept-based themes in mural art.

Series of meetings

The decision to paint the walls facing the road as a part of city beautification has been taken by Municipal Commissioner Pravin Kumar in consultation with the Managing Director of AP Urban Greening and Beautification Corporation.

It may be recalled that the Commissioner had earlier held a series of meetings on prevention of defacing of walls with various sections concerned after the elite of the city raised the issue.

For the time being, part of the walls from Urvasi junction to Tatichetlapalem, Tatichetpalem to the Railway Kalyanamantapam on the Station Road and Siripuram to Park Hotel and Beach Road - a total of 10,000 sft have been taken up.

The highway stretch alone accounts for 20,000 sft.

The work of painting and beautification has been assigned to two artists - Potnuri Srinivasa Rao and Rabbani.

The highway stretch will have abstract art, the one from Tatichetlapalem will be nature-related and the on the beach road the theme will be sea-related including species, according to Assistant Director (Horticulture) M. Damodara Rao.

More artists are welcome to take up the beautification work and may approach the municipal corporation.

Citizens also may come up with suggestions on beautification and may send them to the Municipal Commissioner or the Assistant Director (Horticulture).
