PUNE: Unidentified men allegedly stole 472 boxes of wine worth over Rs 15.12 lakh from a godown by making a hole in the building’s wall. The incident took place in Phursungi, some time between Thursday night and Friday morning.
The godown, belonging to Wine Enterprises, is on the premises of Shreenath Warehousing on Pune-Saswad Road.
Shankar Kalase (42), in charge of the facility, has registered a complaint with the Hadapsar police.
When Kalase opened the godown on Friday morning, he found that the place had been ransacked and the wine boxes were missing. Two employees have been detained for questioning.
Senior inspector Rajendra Mohite, in charge of the Hadapsar police station, said on Saturday, “The suspects used sharp objects to make a round hole in the rear wall the of godown run by Narendra Singh Uppal. They stole the wine boxes and fled in a waiting vehicle.”
He said that the theft was well planned. The building is usually packed to capacity with goods from all sides, which means that there is no scope to make a hole in the wall from either side. “The suspects, however, chose a spot from where some boxes had been shifted just hours earlier, around 5pm on Thursday. The godown is huge and was locked from the front. Hence, we suspect that some employees may have tipped off the suspects to make a hole at a particular spot,” he said.

“Shreenath Warehousing has around 25 godowns, but there were only two security guards posted at the main gate. We suspect the involvement of four to five people in the theft,” Mohite added.
Senior inspector Sunil Yadav of the Pune crime branch (Unit V), who is conducting parallel investigations in the case, said there are two CCTV cameras installed in the godown, but the suspects also stole the hard discs and internet modem. The suspects may have taken over 30 minutes to commit the theft.
Kalase told TOI that when he opened the godown on Friday, he found that the computers and office furniture had been ransacked. “When our employees searched the premises, they came across a 15x10ft hole in the wall. An inspecting of the stock revealed that 472 wine boxes were missing. Eight labourers and four clerical staff work here, but we don’t suspect their involvement in the crime as they have been working for us for a long time. This is the first time such an incident has taken place here.”
He added that the rear side of the building is not manned by security guards. “We have now enhanced security arrangements in the godown to avert similar incidents in future. We are also repairing the hole,” Kalase added.
The suspects were booked for committing an offence under Sections 461 (dishonestly breaking open receptacle containing property) and 380 (theft in dwelling house) of the Indian Penal Code.
