NEW DELHI: Over a third of the students at Lady Shri Ram College find the “general experience of lectures” “very good” and 43% think it’s good; the “general level of satisfaction with teachers” is reasonably high with 25% saying “very good” and 41% “good”; 86% students agreed that the classroom provides “adequate context for debate and discussion.”
As part of its preparation for the National Assessment and Accreditation Council grading, LSR conducted an internal survey to gauge students’ satisfaction with the college on a variety of parameters.
Students have given the college a thumbs-up in all. A total of 1,520 students responded to the questionnaire – 39% first-year, 28% second-year and 32% final-year students. “A special evaluation form was designed by the NAAC steering committee of the college …[and] covered areas like institution strength and vision, general ambience and learning climate, learning and evaluation, tutorial system, student support vis-à-vis extra-curricular and co-curricular infrastructure and learning resources, interactions with administrative office, etc,” says the report.
For gauging levels of satisfaction with teachers, students were asked “how satisfied they felt with their teachers in terms of attributes like fairness, empathy, rapport, academic encouragement and support and time spent mentoring outside the classroom.”
The tutorial system in the undergraduate courses has been badly impacted by the reforms but at LSR, 26% still found it very good and 46% good. Only 28% thought it was just satisfactory. Assessing infrastructural facilities – another aspect of the higher education system that’s been severely strained by reforms -- 35% thought it very good, 37% good and 21%, satisfactory.
And when asked if “diversity and democracy are respected in LSR”, 53% said “always”, 43%, “usually” and only 4% said “seldom.”
