Kamrup court stays state cricket body polls
Silchar: The civil court of Kamrup (Metro) on Friday stayed the general meeting of Assam Cricket Association (ACA) and election to the powerful sports body in response to a petition filed by a functionary of District Sports Association (DSA), Nagaon.
The court asked ACA not to hold its annual session and general election for the time being.
The court order reached Silchar when ACA’s annual general meeting was under way at the Banga Bhavan auditorium here.
The meeting was postponed at 2 pm on Friday after the order reached ACA functionaries through the office of the Cachar DC.
Acting on a petition filed by Tapan Kumar Sharma, vice-president of Nagaon DSA, Justice C B Gogoi restrained ACA from holding the session and election scheduled for the day.
Hazarika, in his petition, alleged financial irregularities in ACA. He said ACA failed to submit its financial report from 2010 to 2013 and is yet to clear its accounts and audits for this period.
Sitting ACA president and former state minister Gautam Roy and minister of agriculture, panchayat and rural development Rockybul Hussain were contenders of the coveted post of president.
Roy has been holding the ACA president’s post for the last three terms, since 2002.
