Two more arrested in fake EWS certificates case

Two more arrests were made during ongoing investigations by the Delhi Police crime branch into a city-wide school admissions racket on the basis of fake Economically Weaker Section (EWS) certificates on Friday.

Identified as Arun Kumar, who owns and operates a small photocopy shop and one Hukum Singh, the accused were connected to the latest module of specialising in getting children admitted to prominent city schools on the basis of fake documentation, said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner of police (crime).

Mr. Yadav said, one Neeraj had been arrested recently after it was learnt that he had managed 10 admissions at the Lancer Convent School in Rohini under the EWS quota using fake documents.

It was his intensive and tactful interrogation, according to Mr. Yadav, that led the police to the associate Kumar on June 25 and the seizure of equipment used by him for preparing fake EWS certificates and residence proofs.

According to Mr. Yadav, the examination of some parents who were found to have paid to get their children admitted at prominent city schools, had thrown up the names of one Ratan and one Hukum Singh.

Singh, Mr. Yadav said, was alleged to have secured two admissions in Bal Bharti Public School Pitampura. During his interrogation, it was revealed that Singh used to get the certificates and other documents from the SDM office in Kanjhawla on commission basis before getting in touch with one Bhupender who provided him certificates without going to SDM office.

“Once, he had gone to the Bal Bharti Public School in Pitampura for the admission of his neighbour’s daughter where he came to know that there were many parents who were willing to get their children admitted at any cost,” said Mr. Yadav.

According to Mr. Yadav, since he knew that Bhupender can prepare fake documents, he started wandering outside the school in search of prospective clients and met one Ratan whom he lured into the racket by telling him that he had contacts within the school administration and could get his son admitted for free if he could arrange 3-4 parents who could pay him for the admission of their children.

Ratan is alleged to have introduced him to his friend Rajeev Aggarwal and Varun Aggarwal who were also trying for the admission of their wards and the deal was finalised for Rs. 3 lakh.

Later, according to the police, Ratan, Rajeev Aggarwal and Varun Aggarwal came to know that the admission was done under EWS category and demanded their money back. But Hukum Singh assured them that he will get the admission changed to general category after a year and asked them to get admissions on the basis of documents provided by him.
