MUMBAI: A day after a woman ticket checker was assaulted at GTB Nagar railway station; the Sion police station arrested three persons on charges of rioting, assault, preventing a government servant from discharging her duty and manhandling a government employee on duty.
Assistant police inspector Santosh Gaikwad said that the police arrested three persons.
They were Santosh Panigrahi Sagar Maroo and Amanullah Shaikh. "They had created a riot like situation and assaulted the woman TC. We are interrogating them," said a police officer. The cops were questioning the accused on various lines and trying to establish a connection between the trio. "How come the three from different areas and not known to each other got involved into it. Their interrogation will disclose many things," the officer added.
Meanwhile, on Friday more than 200 ticket checkers (TCs) took out a protest march to the DRM's office at Mumbai CST on Friday afternoon. They demanded "police protection" for 1,100 TCs working in two shifts in Mumbai division.
Said a protestor, "We have also threatened a pen-down strike if the railway superiors fail to protect our lives. There have been several attacks on checkers and this needs to be stopped."
Another TC said that senior officials accepted their memorandum and assured them that women TCs will taken off duties from "sensitive locations".Earlier on Thursday, a female ticket checker was manhandled by a ticketless traveller's associates and other commuters at GTB Nagar station. When another railway employee went to her aid, he too was assaulted. Security agencies rushed to the station after a booking window glass was smashed. Two people were handed over to the Sion police.
The incident has brought into focus the issue of security of female railway ticket checkers.
"Some of our other demands were filling up of vacany posts so that we can have more checkers on the suburban and long distance routes. We also want our daily targets to be reduced as it is undue pressure on the checkers," a TC, who did not wish to be identified said.
