Another week in jail for man accused of raping KZN jogger

Durban - The man accused of attacking and raping a jogger in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, while she was out on a morning run will spend another week in custody.

The man, 25, who cannot be named because he has yet to plead, appeared in the Howick Magistrate's Court on Friday where he applied for bail.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the matter had been postponed until June 3 when the magistrate would deliver judgment on his bid for bail.

The man, who was arrested last Wednesday, is accused of raping a Johannesburg businesswoman while she was jogging on Curry’s Post Road on June 13.

She had been visiting her parents in Howick over the long weekend.

South African Community Action Network head Brian Jones said last week that the woman was tackled and pulled into a ditch before being raped at knifepoint.

Hidden by the long grass, the woman could hear and see the passing traffic during the attack.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the man was arrested after an investigation by the Howick Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
