Revenue growth sizzles at bacon producer

Annual sales have moved closer to £160m at one of the UK's largest bacon and meat processing companies in its latest financial year, newly filed accounts seen by Insider have revealed.

Direct Table Foods, a subsidiary of Danish company Tican Group, produces more than 1,000 tonnes a week from its 135,000 sq ft purpose-built factory in Bury St Edmunds.

Newly filed accounts for the company have revealed that turnover increased by more than £9m, from £149.9m to £158.9m, for the year to 28 September 2014.

Operating profits rose from £5.5m to £6.7m and pre-tax profits grew to almost £6m from £4.7m the year before.

The improvement in revenues and profits was achieved despite what the company described as a "difficult and constantly challenging retail climate".

In the annual report, Direct Table Foods said: "The directors consider that in a difficult and constantly challenging retail climate, within a competitive market sector, the performance in the year, together with the year-end position, were satisfactory.

"Compared to the previous 12 months, raw material prices were generally more stable and this affected the company's result for the year. The directors do not expect market conditions to materially change in the immediate future although they do expect continued pressure on costs together with further pressure on margins."

According to the accounts, Direct Table Foods employed about 480 staff during the year.
