Chandler's Transportation and Development Department is installing 70 cacti made of steel, along with brick pavers, boulders and decomposed granite, as part of an upgrade project for the mile-long median located down the center of Arizona Avenue between Chandler Heights Road and Riggs Road.

The cacti range in type from Saguaros to Prickley Pear. City crews constructed 12 steel planters to hold the cacti, which are accented with large angular stones.

To accommodate the work, some lanes nearest the center median have been closed to traffic. Motorists are asked to use caution when driving through the construction zone. The work is expected to be completed by mid-July.
