KANPUR: Four children drowned in Ganga at Panchal Ghat in Farrukhabad district. They were identified as Phoolkali (9), Ranjit (8), Adesh (6) and Anshika (11), all natives of Talihar village in Shajahanpur district. The police said the accident took place when the children had gone for a bath in Ganga at Panchal Ghat Durwasa Ashram.
The incident took place in the morning hours when five kids Anshika (11) Makhanlal (10) Phoolkali (9), Ranjit (8) and Adesh (6), all natives of Talihar village in Shahjahanpur, who had come to Panchal Ghat Durwasa Ashram of Farrukhabad along with their elders to take part in a religious discourse, went for a bath in river Ganga.
Eyewitnesses said they entered into the main current of the river. Within minutes, the five started to call out for calling for help as they struggled to stay afloat.
Hearing the victims’ cries, the local shopkeepers jumped into the river and managed to rescue one Makhan Lal while the four others went missing. They immediately alerted the Panchalghat police.
The rescue team later pulled out Anshika (11) Phoolkali (9), Ranjit (8) and Adesh (6).
"While Anshika, Phoolkali, Ranjit and Adesh were declared dead, Makhan Lal was shifted to district Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. They all were bathing with their elders at Panchal Ghat when they started drowning. It is a tragic incident," said additional superintendent of police Rambhuvan Chaurasia.
