Nasscom to set up Centre for Excellence

To nurture Big Data and Analytics professionals in the country in a big way, NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Services Companies) will set up a Centre of Excellence in the near future.

The initiative will focus on bringing the eco-system players on one platform besides imparting quality training to the qualified in the field of Big Data. The Centre will be built in a PPP (Public Private Partnership) model with active assistance from the government, said BVR Mohan Reddy, Chairman, NASSCOM. He said that the project was in the final stages of approval.

Mr. Reddy was talking on the inaugural day of NASSCOM’s ‘Big Data and Analytics Summit 2015’ on Thursday. The theme of the third edition of the summit, being held this year in the city, is ‘Data Driven Disruption- The Next Frontier.’

He announced that the NASSCOM would play a pro-active role in creating awareness on Big Data. “In an aircraft there are about 5000 sensors. In a 12-hour long haul flight, 887 Teraflops of data is generated. In the last couple of years, large data streams are coming from not just banking, insurance and finance but also agriculture, mining, manufacturing, retails and others. The data has also proliferated because of Internet of Things.”

“This is a big opportunity for Indian IT capabilities and in terms of business. We need to write more tech tools and skills are required which are multi disciplinary,” he said. Vice-Chairman of Nasscom K.S. Viswanathan said that there were presently 50,000 specialists in the field of analytics in the country but there was a growing demand for the professionals. “By 2020, India will require three lakhs data scientists. Analytics industry will annually grow by 22 per cent for the next five years in the country. There are about 370 startups in the country who are working on providing analytics solutions in the fields of banking, telecom and others. We want to mentor these startups and also develop curriculum that can be used in Universities and also in Industry. In the next five years, we expect 300 to 400 Analytics solutions coming out of India.”
