Shobha Karandlaje, MP, said on Thursday that an amount of Rs. 56.5 crore had been released by the Union government for the development of highways and bridges in different parts of the Udupi-Chikkamagaluru parliamentary constituency.

In a release issued here, Ms. Karandlaje said Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had sanctioned the release of the amount.

Of this, Rs. 24.96 crore would be spent on widening the existing Sringeri-Nemmuru-Kerekatte-S.K. Border Road into a two-lane road. A major bridge would be constructed on Tuga River on the Hariharpura National Highway at a cost of Rs. 17.11 crore. Select portions of Tirthahalli-Udupi National Highway and eight minor bridges would be widened at a cost of Rs. 8.12 crore.

Two minor bridges would be widened at Hariharpura at a cost of Rs. 4.81 crore. The road in Sringeri town would be asphalted at a cost of Rs. 1.5 crore. Ms. Karandlaje said these roads and bridges were narrow and in poor condition, which could result in accidents.

She had submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Minister had responded positively to her proposal, she said.
