Commercializing floriculture

Developing floriculture for commercial purpose is a new idea that has cropped up recently in the State. Keeping in mind the quality of the soil, climatic conditions and availability of necessary ingredients that help in the flourishing of floriculture, both regions of Kashmir and Jammu are promising. The weakness of the floriculturists in our State is that they are not adequately informed on the availability of world market for a variety of flowers that they can produce and market in scientific manner. We believe that after the successful experiment with Srinagar Tulip Garden, the authorities at the Horticulture Department began to entertain the idea of looking for world market of a vast variety of flowers that we produce. It is a good idea and needs to be pursued vigorously.
Floriculture, if developed on scientific lines and if its marketing is regularized, has the potential to increase to our foreign exchange earnings and in the process provide better chances for our farmers to gain from the exercise. The fat is that floriculture industry in our State is still in embryonic stage. Horticulture Department should focus full attention on how the industry should be developed to become foreign exchange earning sources and of much help to improving the economy of the State. At the same time, it will provide employment to many unemployed youth in the State. Once people come to know that this is a lucrative business, then small farmers will try to utilize their small farms for production of flowers and thereby stabilize their financial condition. The government should encourage such small scale farmer by providing them financial assistance and technical knowhow which the State has at its disposal.
