Barcelona standing chief Josep Maria Bartomeu “could be going to prison”, fellow presidential candidate Jordi Majo has warned voters.

Sandro Rosell's successor – who has been in charge at Camp Nou since stepping following his predecessor's resignation in January 2014 – is currently embroiled in a fraud dispute over Neymar's €86.2 million move two years ago.

The legal issues hanging over Bartomeu's head have been highlighted by Majo, who does not think his political opponent is taking enough responsibility for what has gone wrong within the Catalan club.

"Those who used to run the club have broken, hate-filled relationships," he told Efe. "They speak ill of each other and it's to the detriment of Barca.

"Two former presidents in Rosell and Bartomeu have been indicted, while [fellow candidate] Joan Laporta had spies to work against the club. This is a war. This war will not end if Bartomeu wins. This war will not end if Laporta wins.

"In this country there is so much that people do not understand and Bartomeu needs to take responsibility for what has happened. This is a president that could be going to prison and we must assume the worst case scenario."

Barcelona's presidential race will conclude on July 18, four weeks before La Liga kicks off and Luis Enrique's men begin the defence of their title.
