Ricky Hatton believes that Amir Khan’s win against Chris Algieri has just strengthened his case for a super fight with undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. According to Hatton, Khan wasn’t really prevailing over Algieri in his last fight and it could help the former Olympic medalist land a fight with Mayweather on the brash American’s upcoming fight on Sept. 12.

“I don’t think Amir would have scared Mayweather with his last fight performance and that might help him get the fight,” Hatton told UK’s Daily Star. “Amir was always on the move against Devon Alexander and Luis Collazo in his two fights before Algieri and that might have put Floyd off.”

The Bolton-born fighter fought Collazo in May when Mayweather chose to fight Argentine Marcos Maidana instead of him. Collazo proved to be an easy opponent for Khan, who knocked the Brooklyn native down three times in a roughhouse fight to secure a landslide unanimous decision and win the World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Welterweight titles.

After missing out on a fight against Mayweather, who chose to face Maidana a rematch, Khan pursued a different path for his next fight. Khan defended his WBC Silver Welterweight title against Devon Alexander in December. He displayed another dominant performance and outboxed the American in the 36-minute bout to win the judges’ score.

In Khan’s next fight, the Briton claimed a sub-par performance in his win against Chris Algieri, who was recently crushed by Khan’s former sparring mate Manny Pacquiao. Bleacher Report wrote that Algieri was the “aggressor throughout the fight.”

Khan maintains that he is close to sealing a fight with Mayweather, but the undefeated fighter continues to deny such claim. In an interview with Fight Hype, Mayweather said that he is one hundred percent serious in fighting Karim Mayfield or Andre Berto when he returns to the ring for his final fight in his Showtime contract on Sept. 12.

Mayfield (18-2-1) is coming off from back-to-back losses against Thomas Dulorme and Emmanuel Taylor and a victory against Michael Balasi in 2014. Berto (30-3-0), on the other hand, fought once in 2015. Berto defeated Josesito Lopez to win the Interim WBA Welterweight title.
