The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited in October last year had petitioned the TNERC to approve short-term PPA’s for 2015 at Rs. 5.50 per unit.
The Tangedco in the petition said, “The quantum of power required to meet the unrestricted demand of power is around 13,000 MW. The power available from various sources to the petitioner is in the order of 10,000 MW, resulting in severe shortage of supply to meet the requirements of about 3,000 MW.”
The petition further said the gap in demand-supply could not be reduced with the available capacity. “Further capacity addition is anticipated only after three years.”
As per bids, inter-State bidders quoted availability of 948 MW RTC power for the entire period (Oct 2014-Sept 2015) between Rs. 4.39 and Rs. 7.75 per unit. Intra-State bidders offered 1,220 MW at Rs. 5.25 to Rs. 7 per unit. Another 612 MW was offered by both inter-State and intra-State bidders.
However, Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd offered power at Rs. 5.20 per unit and other bidders offering power from Tamil Nadu sources were asked to match the rates, but they made it clear that the rate was not viable.
Tangedco finalised rates for 1,393 MW at Rs 5.50 per unit from intra-State power generators.
